Nail Diseases

Onychosis, also known as nail disease, is an illness or deformity of the nail. Although the nail is a skin appendage and a structure produced by the skin, nail diseases are classified differently because they have their own signs and symptoms that may be related to other medical conditions.

Ingrown nails, tumors, nail lifting and splitting, psoriatic arthritis, fungal or bacterial nail infections, and skin infections (paronychia) are just a few of the numerous conditions that fall under the umbrella term "nail disease.".

  • Your nails will wilt or thicken due to a nail fungus. Infected nails may also hurt or separate from your nail bed.
  • Redness and swelling are symptoms of skin infections near your nails.

Your nails may also be a sign of more serious health issues. If you see clubbing, discoloration, or obvious sunken lines in your nails, consult your doctor.

Treatment for Nail Diseases

Depending on what's causing your nail problems, there are several different treatment options.
An oral antifungal medication may be used to treat nail fungus, creams usually are ineffective for fungal infections.

Simple infections might resolve by themselves if you have them
however: please book an appointment if you experience an abscess.

You might also need to see our specialist if an underlying medical condition is the root cause of your nail disease. For instance, a rheumatologist (a physician who specializes in treating arthritis) and a dermatologist to treat psoriatic arthritis, a nail disease connected to the skin condition psoriasis.
